What is Robotic Hysterectomy?

A robotic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus using a state-of-the-art robotic system controlled by a highly skilled surgeon. Unlike traditional open surgery, robotic hysterectomy requires only a few small incisions — typically less than 1 cm each.

The surgeon operates from a console with a magnified, 3D high-definition view of the surgical site, using robotic arms equipped with specialized surgical instruments that can move with far greater precision than the human hand alone.

Why is it performed?

Your doctor may recommend a robotic hysterectomy to treat several gynecological conditions that do not respond to non-surgical treatments. The goal is to relieve symptoms, remove disease, or prevent cancer progression while ensuring the least possible disruption to surrounding tissue.

The Procedure, Step by Step

Robotic hysterectomy is performed under general anaesthesia, typically taking 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the extent of the surgery required.

1

Anaesthesia & Preparation

You are placed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is gently inflated with CO₂ gas to create working space for the robotic instruments.

2

Small Incisions Made

Three to four tiny incisions (5–12 mm each) are made in the abdomen. Robotic ports and a camera are gently inserted.

3

Robotic Arms Docked

The robotic system is attached to the ports. The surgeon moves to the console and controls the robotic arms with 3D HD visualization.

4

Uterus Removed & Closure

The uterus is precisely detached and removed. Incisions are closed with sutures. Recovery begins within hours in a comfortable room.

What to Expect

Robotic hysterectomy offers significant advantages over open and traditional laparoscopic surgery. Like all surgical procedures, it also carries some risks your care team will discuss with you in detail.

Benefits

  • Smaller Incisions
Only 3–4 tiny cuts of 5–12 mm — far less trauma to the body than open surgery.
  • Significantly Less Pain
Patients report lower post-operative pain and reduced need for pain medication.
  • Minimal Blood Loss
Robotic precision significantly reduces intraoperative bleeding and the need for transfusions.
  • Faster Recovery — 2 to 3 Weeks
Most patients return to normal activities in under three weeks, vs. 6–8 weeks for open surgery.
  • Reduced Scarring
Tiny incisions leave minimal visible scarring compared to traditional open hysterectomy.
  • Superior Surgical Precision
10× magnification and tremor-free robotic control enable exceptional accuracy around nerves and vessels.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay
Typically discharged within 1–2 days, compared to 3–5 days for open surgery.

Possible Risks

  • Risk of Infection
As with any surgery, infection at the incision site is possible, though minimized by sterile technique.
  • Bleeding
Minor intraoperative or postoperative bleeding can occur. Blood transfusion is rarely required.
  • Anaesthesia Reactions
General anaesthesia carries a small risk of nausea, allergic reaction, or cardiovascular response.
  • Injury to Adjacent Organs
Rare possibility of inadvertent injury to bladder, bowel, or blood vessels — managed immediately if it occurs.
  • Blood Clots (DVT)
Deep vein thrombosis risk exists with any pelvic surgery; preventive measures are routinely taken.
  • Conversion to Open Surgery
In rare cases, the surgeon may need to convert to open surgery for patient safety.

Your Recovery Journey

Recovery from robotic hysterectomy is significantly faster than traditional open surgery. Most women return to daily activities within 2–3 weeks.

Day 1 — In Hospital
Waking Up from Surgery

You’ll wake up in the recovery room with nursing care monitoring your vitals. Most patients can sit up and take liquids within a few hours. Pain is managed with IV medication and typically well-controlled.

Days 1–2 — Discharge
Going Home

Most patients are discharged within 1–2 days. You’ll receive a detailed discharge plan, oral pain relief, and instructions from your Mitra Care Associate. Gentle walking is encouraged from day one to promote circulation.

Week 1–2 — At Home
Rest & Light Activity

Rest is important. Avoid heavy lifting (over 5 kg) and strenuous activity. Short walks around the home are beneficial. You may experience mild bloating, shoulder tip pain from gas, or light vaginal discharge — all normal.

Week 2–3 — Returning to Life
Back to Light Work & Routine

Most women return to desk work and light household activities by week 2–3. You’ll have a follow-up with your surgeon. Driving is typically permitted after 2 weeks once you’re off strong painkillers.

Week 4–6 — Full Recovery
Resuming Full Activity

By 4–6 weeks, most women feel fully recovered. Exercise, swimming, and sexual activity can typically be resumed after your surgeon gives clearance at the 6-week follow-up. Long-term outlook is excellent.

Pain Management
Oral painkillers prescribed at discharge effectively manage discomfort. Most patients need them only for 5–7 days.
Nutrition & Hydration
A high-fibre diet prevents constipation. Stay well-hydrated and eat protein-rich foods to aid healing.
Activity Restrictions
No lifting over 5 kg for 4 weeks. Avoid high-impact exercise for 6 weeks. Short daily walks are encouraged from Day 2 onwards.

When to Call Your Doctor

After your robotic hysterectomy, most recovery is smooth and uneventful. However, certain symptoms require prompt medical attention. Contact your Mitra Care team or go to the nearest emergency if you experience any of the following:

High Fever

Temperature above 38.5°C (101.3°F) lasting more than 24 hours post-discharge may indicate infection.

Heavy Vaginal Bleeding

Soaking more than one pad per hour, or passing large clots is a sign to seek immediate care.

Severe Abdominal Pain

Pain that is sudden, severe, or not relieved by prescribed painkillers requires immediate evaluation.

Signs of Infection at Incision

Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge from any incision site should be reported promptly.

Difficulty Urinating

Inability to urinate, or a strong burning sensation when urinating, warrants a call to your care team.

Leg Pain or Swelling

Calf pain, redness, or swelling in one leg may indicate a DVT (blood clot) and needs urgent attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

We believe an informed patient makes the best decisions. Here are answers to the most common questions about robotic hysterectomy.

Yes. Robotic hysterectomy is a well-established, FDA-cleared surgical technique with an excellent safety profile. Complication rates are actually lower than open surgery due to the precision of robotic instrumentation. At Mitra, all procedures are performed by experienced, robotic-certified gynaecologists.

Recovery is typically 2–3 weeks for most daily activities, compared to 6–8 weeks for open surgery. You’ll be walking the day after surgery, home within 1–2 days, and back to desk work within 2–3 weeks. Full clearance for all activities is given at your 6-week follow-up.

Robotic hysterectomy is significantly less painful than open surgery. Post-operatively, most patients describe mild-to-moderate discomfort manageable with oral pain medication. Many women are surprised at how comfortable their recovery is.

Robotic hysterectomy leaves only 3–4 tiny incisions of 5–12 mm each. These heal into small, barely visible marks over time — far less noticeable than the large horizontal or vertical scar from open surgery.

For complex gynaecological procedures, robotic surgery offers several advantages: 3D HD visualization (vs. 2D in laparoscopy), greater instrument articulation, elimination of hand tremor, and enhanced ergonomics for the surgeon. This translates to better outcomes, especially for difficult cases.

Only if your ovaries are also removed. If your ovaries are preserved, you will not enter surgical menopause. The decision to remove or preserve the ovaries depends on your condition, age, and risk factors, and will be discussed during your consultation.

Most insurance plans cover hysterectomy. The Mitra team will check your insurance benefits, handle pre-authorisation, and help you understand your coverage and out-of-pocket costs before you commit to anything. We also offer no-cost EMI options.
