What is a Myomectomy?
A myomectomy is a specialized surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) while leaving the uterus completely intact. Unlike a hysterectomy, this procedure preserves your ability to bear children. Using advanced minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopic or robotic-assisted), our surgeons can pinpoint and remove fibroids with minimal disruption to surrounding healthy tissue.
The goal is to relieve your symptoms, such as heavy bleeding and pelvic pressure, while optimizing the health of your uterus for future fertility.
Symptoms Relieved by Myomectomy
Your doctor may recommend this surgery if fibroids are causing severe disruptions to your quality of life or interfering with your plans to grow your family.
Precision Fibroid Removal
Minimally invasive approach to preserve your uterus
The Procedure, Step by Step
Minimally invasive myomectomy is performed under general anaesthesia. The exact time depends on the size, number, and location of your fibroids.
Anaesthesia & Prep
You are placed under general anaesthesia. The abdomen is gently inflated with CO₂ gas to create optimal working space for the instruments.
Small Incisions
Three to four tiny incisions (around 5–12 mm) are made. A laparoscope (camera) and precise surgical instruments are carefully inserted.
Fibroid Removal
The surgeon identifies the fibroids and carefully dissects them from the uterine wall. The fibroids are safely extracted through the small incisions.
Uterine Reconstruction
The uterine muscle is meticulously sutured back together to ensure strength for future pregnancies. The external incisions are then closed.
What to Expect
Myomectomy provides immense relief while preserving your uterus. Like any medical procedure, it has distinct benefits and potential risks that our team will thoroughly discuss with you.
Benefits
- Preserves FertilityKeeps the uterus fully intact, allowing for future pregnancies once fully healed.
- Symptom ReliefSignificant reduction in heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and bladder pressure.
- Faster RecoveryOur minimally invasive approach means most patients return to normal life within 2–4 weeks.
- Smaller IncisionsTiny incisions (rather than a large abdominal cut) mean less pain and excellent cosmetic results.
- Shorter Hospital StayMost patients can go home the very next day, recovering in the comfort of their own home.
Possible Risks
- Fibroid RecurrenceWhile removed fibroids don’t return, new fibroids can develop over time.
- Excessive BleedingThe uterus is highly vascular. Some bleeding during surgery is expected, but excessive bleeding is a rare risk.
- Adhesion FormationScar tissue can form in the pelvis after surgery, occasionally affecting fertility or causing discomfort.
- Pregnancy ImplicationsDepending on the incision deepness, a C-section may be recommended for future deliveries.
- Conversion to HysterectomyIn extremely rare emergency cases involving severe bleeding, the uterus may need to be removed.
Your Recovery Journey
Thanks to minimally invasive techniques, recovery from myomectomy is smooth and progressive. You can expect to gradually return to full activity within 2–4 weeks.
You will be monitored as anaesthesia wears off. Pain is typically managed effectively with IV medications. Our team will encourage you to sit up and take short walks to promote circulation.
Once you can eat, drink, and walk without issues, you’ll be cleared for discharge. You will leave with a detailed care plan, oral pain relief, and dietary instructions from your Mitra Care Associate.
Rest is your priority. Avoid lifting heavy objects. Mild spotting or vaginal discharge is normal as your uterus heals internally. Walking short distances helps prevent blood clots.
Most patients comfortably return to desk work and light duties around 2 to 3 weeks. You’ll have a follow-up appointment to check your incisions and review your recovery progress.
If you are planning to conceive, you will typically need to wait 3 to 6 months to allow the uterine muscle to heal completely. Your surgeon will provide the green light for trying to get pregnant.
When to Call Your Doctor
Recovery after a myomectomy is generally very safe, but being aware of warning signs is critical. Contact your Mitra Care team immediately if you experience any of the following:
Temperature above 38.5°C (101.3°F) lasting more than 24 hours post-discharge may indicate infection.
Soaking more than one pad per hour, or passing large clots, is a sign to seek immediate care.
Pain that is sudden, sharp, worsening, or not relieved by prescribed painkillers requires evaluation.
Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or bad-smelling discharge from any of the incision sites.
Inability to urinate, or a strong, painful burning sensation when emptying your bladder.
Calf pain, unusual redness, or severe swelling in one leg may indicate a blood clot (DVT).
Frequently Asked Questions
We believe an informed patient makes the best decisions. Here are answers to the most common questions about fibroid removal.
Yes! Preserving your ability to conceive is often the primary reason for choosing a myomectomy over a hysterectomy. By removing the fibroids and meticulously reconstructing the uterus, we restore a healthier environment for pregnancy. You’ll typically need to wait 3–6 months for the uterus to heal before trying to conceive.
The specific fibroids removed during surgery will not grow back. However, because you retain your uterus, it is possible for new fibroids to develop in the future. The risk of recurrence varies based on genetics, age, and hormonal factors.
A myomectomy removes only the problematic fibroids and leaves the entire uterus intact, keeping your fertility options open. A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the entire uterus, which definitively cures fibroids but ends your ability to carry a child.
Because we use minimally invasive techniques, the recovery is much faster than traditional open surgery. Most patients can comfortably return to desk or light work within 2 to 4 weeks. If you have a physically demanding job, you may need 4 to 6 weeks.
You will experience some post-operative pain, but it is typically significantly less than with an open abdominal surgery. We manage your pain effectively with oral medications, and most patients only require them for the first 5 to 7 days.
No. Our ₹1.5 Lakhs package is all-inclusive for the standard minimally invasive myomectomy procedure, including surgeon fees, anaesthesia, operating room costs, and the standard hospital stay. If highly specialized care or extended stays are required, our team discusses all financials upfront with absolute transparency.
Minimally Invasive vs. Open Myomectomy
Understanding the different surgical approaches helps you make the best decision for your body and your future fertility.
| Feature | Minimally Invasive Myomectomy Mitra Recommended | Open Myomectomy (Laparotomy) Traditional Open Surgery |
|---|---|---|
| Incision Size | Tiny keyhole cuts (5–12 mm) | Large 5-7 inch abdominal cut |
| Recovery Time | 2–4 weeks | 6–8 weeks |
| Hospital Stay | 1–2 days | 3–5 days |
| Pain & Discomfort | Significantly lower | Higher, requires more medication |
| Scarring | Minimal to almost invisible | Prominent abdominal scar |
| Blood Loss | Low risk of transfusion | Higher risk of significant bleeding |
| Adhesion Risk | Lower (Better for fertility) | Higher risk of pelvic scar tissue |
