What is Endometrial Cancer Surgery?

Endometrial cancer (ca endometrium) surgery usually involves a total hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and cervix) combined with the removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes. Because cancer cells can migrate, this procedure is about much more than just removing the organ.

During surgery, your surgeon will meticulously inspect the areas around your uterus to look for signs that cancer has spread. Crucially, your surgeon may also remove lymph nodes in the pelvis for testing. This “staging” process is essential to determine the exact extent of the cancer and guide whether further treatments like radiation or chemotherapy are needed.

Common Symptoms Addressed

Cancer in the uterus lining can spread quickly if not treated in time. Patients usually seek surgical intervention after experiencing:

Postmenopausal Bleeding
Abnormal Vaginal Discharge
Pelvic Pain & Pressure
Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Oncology Staging

Comprehensive cancer removal using robotic precision

Complete Removal Extirpation of uterus, cervix, ovaries, and tubes
Lymph Node Staging Targeted testing to ensure cancer hasn’t spread
Robotic Precision Advanced optics for navigating complex pelvic anatomy
Faster Next Steps Minimally invasive approach enables rapid healing for adjuvant therapy

The Procedure, Step by Step

Robotic Endometrial Cancer Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The advanced robotic platform allows our oncology specialists to perform complex tumor removal and staging through small incisions.

1

Anaesthesia & Access

Under general anaesthesia, the abdomen is gently inflated with gas. Several small incisions (less than 1 cm) are made to insert the robotic camera and surgical arms.

2

Organ Removal

The surgeon, guided by 3D HD visualization, meticulously detaches and removes the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, ensuring wide, safe margins around the cancer.

3

Lymph Node Staging

The pelvic area is closely inspected. Specific lymph nodes are identified and safely removed to be tested in the pathology lab for microscopic cancer cells.

4

Closure & Pathology

The incisions are closed with dissolving sutures. The removed tissue is immediately sent to pathology to determine the exact stage of your cancer.

What to Expect

When dealing with cancer, achieving complete surgical removal while allowing your body to heal quickly is paramount. Our team will transparently discuss all benefits and potential risks.

Benefits

  • Complete Cancer Eradication
Surgical removal of the uterus is the most definitive treatment for early-stage endometrial cancer.
  • Precise Staging
Testing the lymph nodes gives an exact map of the cancer, ensuring no hidden spread is missed.
  • Faster Recovery for Next Steps
Minimally invasive incisions heal quickly, so if chemotherapy or radiation is needed, you can start sooner.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay
Most patients can recover in the comfort of their home just 1 or 2 days after complex oncology surgery.
  • Less Blood Loss & Pain
Robotic instrumentation provides better control of blood vessels and significantly less trauma to the abdominal wall.

Possible Risks

  • Surgical Menopause
Removal of the ovaries will induce immediate menopause if you haven’t naturally transitioned yet.
  • Lymphedema
Removing lymph nodes carries a risk of fluid build-up (swelling) in the legs, though modern techniques minimize this.
  • Bleeding or Infection
As with any major surgery, there are risks of bleeding and infection, closely monitored by your care team.
  • Damage to Adjacent Organs
Rare risk of injury to the bladder or bowel, though robotic 3D vision drastically reduces this likelihood.
  • Adjuvant Therapy Delays
Should a surgical complication arise, it may delay the start of subsequent radiation or chemotherapy.

Your Recovery Journey

While recovering from oncology surgery requires patience, the robotic approach helps you regain your strength quickly. Our goal is to have you ready for any next steps as safely and comfortably as possible.

Day 1 — Post Surgery
In the Hospital

You will be monitored carefully as you wake up. Pain management will be administered via IV. We will encourage you to sit up and take short walks soon after surgery to prevent blood clots and promote bowel function.

Days 1–2 — Discharge
Going Home

Once you are eating, walking, and passing urine normally, you will be discharged. You will leave with a personalized care plan, prescriptions, and a clear understanding of signs to watch for from your Mitra Care Associate.

Weeks 1–2 — Healing
Rest & Light Activity

Your primary job is to rest. Light walking is excellent, but absolutely no lifting. During this time, your pathology results will return. Your oncology team will meet with you to discuss the final stage of your cancer and the next steps.

Weeks 3–4 — Readiness
Next Phase of Care

You will start feeling much more like yourself. Depending on your pathology results, this is typically when adjuvant therapies (like radiation or chemotherapy) might begin. If no further treatment is needed, you can return to desk work.

6 Weeks — Clearances
Full Surgical Clearance

By 6 weeks, your internal incisions (the vaginal cuff) have usually fully healed. You will be cleared for heavier lifting, exercise, and resuming sexual intercourse.

Pain Management
Oral painkillers will be provided. Most patients find they only need them for the first 5-7 days after robotic surgery.
Lymphedema Prevention
If lymph nodes were removed, elevate your legs when sitting and avoid tight clothing to help prevent swelling.
Activity Restrictions
Strictly avoid lifting over 5 kg and any strenuous activity for the first 4-6 weeks to allow the vaginal cuff to heal.

When to Call Your Doctor

Recovery after robotic endometrial cancer surgery is highly predictable, but keeping an eye out for complications is critical. Contact your Mitra Care team immediately if you experience any of the following:

High Fever

Temperature above 38.5°C (101.3°F) lasting more than 24 hours post-discharge may indicate infection.

Heavy Vaginal Bleeding

Soaking more than one pad per hour, or passing large clots, is a sign to seek immediate care.

Severe Abdominal Pain

Pain that is sudden, sharp, worsening, or not relieved by prescribed painkillers requires evaluation.

Signs of Infection

Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or bad-smelling discharge from any of the incision sites.

Difficulty Urinating

Inability to urinate, or a strong, painful burning sensation when emptying your bladder.

Leg Pain or Swelling

Calf pain or sudden severe swelling in one or both legs may indicate a blood clot or lymphedema.

Frequently Asked Questions

We believe an informed patient makes the best decisions. Here are answers to the most common questions about endometrial cancer surgery.

It depends entirely on the pathology results obtained during surgery. If the cancer is confined to the uterus (Stage 1), surgery alone is often curative. If the staging reveals cancer cells in the lymph nodes or deeper tissues, adjuvant therapies like radiation or chemotherapy will be recommended.

Yes. Because the standard of care for endometrial cancer requires the removal of both ovaries, if you have not yet gone through natural menopause, you will experience surgical menopause immediately following the procedure.

Robotic surgery allows the surgeon to perform the delicate task of lymph node dissection with 10x magnification and extreme precision, which is vital in oncology. Furthermore, the minimally invasive approach means you heal in 3-4 weeks instead of 8 weeks, allowing you to begin any necessary follow-up treatments much sooner.

Staging is the process of finding out how far the cancer has spread. By mapping and removing specific lymph nodes (often using special dyes to find the “sentinel” nodes), the pathologist can check if microscopic cancer cells have begun to travel outside the uterus. This dictates your final treatment plan.

No. Our ₹2.5 Lakhs package is all-inclusive for the standard robotic endometrial cancer procedure, including surgeon fees, anaesthesia, operating room costs, standard lymph node staging, and the standard hospital stay. We emphasize transparency so you can focus on healing.

Robotic Oncology vs. Open Surgery

When treating cancer, precision and recovery time are both critical. Compare the surgical approaches to understand why robotic surgery is becoming the gold standard.
